Lake Rotoiti at Okawa Bay


Site Info:
The Lake Rotoiti lake level recorder is located in Okawa Bay. Data from this site is used to assist with the management of levels within Lake Rotoiti.

The water levels within Lake Rotoiti are controlled by the raising and lowering of the Okere radial gates at the outlet of the lake. The movement of the gates increases or decreases the flow of water from the lake into the upper Kaituna River.

The statutory lake level limits provided on the graph are those set by the consent for the operation of the Okere Gates. The target lake levels are those aimed for in the day to day operation of gates. The maximum flow range through the Okere gates is limited, so extremes of weather such as high or low rainfall may lead to lake levels moving outside of the target range.

Rainfall is also monitored at the Okawa Bay site; however the length of record is currently not of a length to provide meaningful statistics.
