Lake Rotoiti at Narrows Monitoring Buoy

Site Info:
The Lake Rotoiti buoy is operated by the University of Waikato. The buoy provides continuous monitoring of a variety of lake conditions and supplements Bay of Plenty Regional Council's monthly monitoring programme. A wind speed and direction sensor was installed on the buoy in April 2013 with support funding from Waimarino Adventure Park (www.Waimarino.com).

The bottom waters of Lake Rotoiti deoxygenate during the warmer months and the rate that this occurs is increased by nutrient rich water from Lake Rotorua. The continuous monitoring equipment will enable measurement of the rate of deoxygenation much more accurately than relying on daily manual readings from a boat over summer. The rate of deoxygenation of bottom waters is a core lake health measurement.

Data collected from the buoy will be utilised to monitor and assist with the ongoing improvement of lake health. This buoy will be particularly important as we monitor the impact of the Ohau Channel diversion wall on the water quality of Lake Rotoiti. The data from the buoy will enhance our knowledge of the lake and provide for greater research opportunities for students and staff of Waikato University under the auspices of Bay of Plenty Regional Council's Chair in Lake Management and Restoration.
